Development

Here at Frankenstein we believe that there is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all cylinder head.  Other companies that advertise their heads as such have made compromises along the way in an attempt to make their heads perform just ok in most situations. We like to do things a little differently here. We take the time to work with each individual customer to make sure the products they ultimately purchase are the absolute best solution for their application.

hand-port1Once the design requirements are well defined, the development process begins. The first step in the process is to hand grind the initial port dessigns and choose an appropriate valve job, also tailored to the specific needs of the customer.

development flowWhen the initial hand ported design is complete, it is verified on the wet flow bench to ensure the fluid dynamic properties of the head are up to spec.  If anything does not meet Chris’ expectations he goes back to the grinding room to fine tune the design. Once again the head is flow tested and once it passes the head is given to Jesse to begin the digitizing process.

mcam-surfaces2Using the on-machine capabilities of the Centroid 5-axis CNC, Jesse faithfully digitizes the hand crafted shapes into 3D surfaces. Dedicated to perfection, we then inspect the 3D models of the head to make sure everything is satisfactory.  Imperfections and irregularities that are inherent to hand grinding are removed, and the final shapes are analysed and modified if necessary to ensure they will meet the customers’ demands.

toolpathsAfter the 3D models are perfected, tool paths are created and fresh castings are machined on the 5-axis CNC using the latest advances in tooling and machining techniques to provide the best finishes possible and maintain the tightest tolerances.

The last step in the process is to cut the final valve job, also done exclusively on a state-of-the-art Newen CNC seat and guide machine.  This ensures that each and every valve seat is cut to the exact design requirements and maintains perfect consistency throughout the head. The heads are then cleaned, assembled, carefully packed, and shipped out to our customers.

In adddition to developing cylinder heads for the individual customers, Frankenstein Engineering Dynamics also works with the top professional race teams in NHRA and NASCAR along with some of the country's top cylinder head manufacturers and OEMs.
