Few appreciate the complexity of true cylinder head design, particularly the high-power potential from shallow valve angle heads like the M311.
FED studied the LS3 and determined opportunities to optimize its inherent characteristics for air speed, flow, and efficiency. When the MONSTER Series™ finally came to life it turned a lot of heads.
15 years of porting cylinder heads for the most powerful ProStock®, TopFuel® and NHRA® engines taught us a lot. One thing was certain, flow data is not the best indicator of a good cylinder head. Frankenstein’s flow data is good, but it does not tell the whole story. True power is much more than making air flow numbers so keep reading for insight into why Frankenstein is worth so much to power seekers.
Cylinder heads are the most critical engine component for maximum output. FED applies advanced design processes to achieve target outcomes at each phase of the induction system. The camshaft, intake manifold and power adder specifications are also key to high-performance applications that thrive in mid-to-upper rpm range where output peaks. This crucial window holds the secrets that make-or-break true hp gains.
FED’s rigorous cylinder head design process, Reactive Airflow Modeling, is applied to achieve performance objectives that meet our standards for:
FED enhanced the M311 rocker height and valve length to ensure a flawless rocker sweep across the valve tip. The outcome is a 10% increase in valve lift, from .600 to .660, which also allows for larger cams while increasing overall valve train stability and durability.
FED excels at valve train stability – The valve train is the Tasmanian Devil of high-performance racing, and there are big rewards for those who tame it. It is not uncommon to misdiagnose why a valve train loses control. Extreme conditions can ignite valve train to loft, float, deflect or bounce and rob performance and make tuning unreliable.
FED’s development process includes a Spintron® which utilizes a laser valve tracking system to precisely diagnose, treat and perfect a valve train configuration. Spintron® performance insights are vital to understanding various applications and helps FED’s team to lead customers to the right products for their build.
Engine builders and race teams routinely consult FED for the best combination of cams, lifters, push rods, valves, seats, guides and most of all springs. FED can match the right configuration for a specific application and FED offers a large variety of options for any build. In fact, FED cylinder heads are made to order and 50% of those are customized from a myriad of FED options, upgrades and specialized services.
Chris Frank and his team are some of the most knowledgeable and friendly people in the racing industry.
