Why MONSTER™ Heads Make More Power.

Few appreciate the complexity of true cylinder head design, particularly the high-power potential from shallow valve angle heads like the M311.

FED studied the LS3 and determined opportunities to optimize its inherent characteristics for air speed, flow, and efficiency. When the MONSTER Series™ finally came to life it turned a lot of heads.

15 years of porting cylinder heads for the most powerful ProStock®, TopFuel® and NHRA® engines taught us a lot. One thing was certain, flow data is not the best indicator of a good cylinder head.  Frankenstein’s flow data is good, but it does not tell the whole story. True power is much more than making air flow numbers so keep reading for insight into why Frankenstein is worth so much to power seekers.

The flow bench is just one indicator.

Frankenstein heads are scrutinized to achieve the perfect induction system.

Cylinder heads are the most critical engine component for maximum output. FED applies advanced design processes to achieve target outcomes at each phase of the induction system. The camshaft, intake manifold and power adder specifications are also key to high-performance applications that thrive in mid-to-upper rpm range where output peaks. This crucial window holds the secrets that make-or-break true hp gains.

FED’s rigorous cylinder head design process, Reactive Airflow Modeling, is applied to achieve performance objectives that meet our standards for:

  • Air Speed
  • Air Velocity
  • Air Density
  • Air Pressure
  • Air Flow

Chris Frank and his team use proprietary methods and designs to achieve power gains unmatched in the industry.

Attention to details others ignore. This is why Frankenstein heads produce the perfect induction system.

Flow is important but never FED’s sole performance objective. This understanding explains why hp potential for FED heads is often far above the proverbial “2X cfm” from a flow bench.

Hundreds of hours go into FED port designs, valve programs, and chamber designs to reach the full potential of each cylinder head design and its engine combination.

The Engineering team applied thermodynamics to design the MONSTER™ bowl shape relative to 11° valve angles. The throat is a key element for achieving maximum efficiency as it impacts peak air speed and the dynamics of pressure drop and recovery. When developing the MONSTER™, FED scrutinized every performance factor, then tested and retested the design to enable the M311 to disperse fuel uniformly and achieve highest possible combustion efficiency.

The MONSTER™ achieved outcomes that sets a new power threshold for the LS3 platform.

The MONSTER™ combustion chambers are optimized for:

Increased pressure recovery

Ideal density with valve lift

Flow and peak volumetric efficiency throughout the RPM range.

Minimal shrouding.

Port Characteristics – optimized port height in relation to the shallow 11° valve angle for precise burn time and highest possible discharge coefficients.

45° Intake Seat Angle – Precision Newen CNC valve job ensures near zero runout while improving air flow. FED valve jobs are then hand blended with the port and vacuum leak tested ensuring perfect seal. The MONSTER™ achieves FED’s target for maximum flow, a combination of size and form around the valve before and after the seat.

M311 exhaust ports are O-Ringed with Hi-Temp silicone O-Rings which endure extreme temperatures without losing their elasticity.

MONSTER™ valve train stability

FED enhanced the M311 rocker height and valve length to ensure a flawless rocker sweep across the valve tip. The outcome is a 10% increase in valve lift, from .600 to .660, which also allows for larger cams while increasing overall valve train stability and durability.

FED excels at valve train stability – The valve train is the Tasmanian Devil of high-performance racing, and there are big rewards for those who tame it. It is not uncommon to misdiagnose why a valve train loses control. Extreme conditions can ignite valve train to loft, float, deflect or bounce and rob performance and make tuning unreliable.

FED’s development process includes a Spintron® which utilizes a laser valve tracking system to precisely diagnose, treat and perfect a valve train configuration. Spintron® performance insights are vital to understanding various applications and helps FED’s team to lead customers to the right products for their build.

Engine builders and race teams routinely consult FED for the best combination of cams, lifters, push rods, valves, seats, guides and most of all springs. FED can match the right configuration for a specific application and FED offers a large variety of options for any build. In fact, FED cylinder heads are made to order and 50% of those are customized from a myriad of FED options, upgrades and specialized services.
